First certificates for carbon offset project in Eritrea

This myclimate carbon offset project in Eritrea replaces traditional stoves with smokeless, energy-saving models.

At the beginning of August, first certificates for the myclimate Gold Standard climate protection project in Eritrea were issued. The project, implemented by the Swiss Support Committee for Eritrea (SUKE) and its Eritrean partner organization Vision Eritrea, replaces traditional stoves with new smokefree and energy saving models. The latter save about 50 per cent of firewood. The consumption of firewood and therefore also deforestation and the emission of greenhouse gases are reduced. This reduction of smoke and greenhouse gases benefits the climate and improves women’s and children’s health. The project, which has been running since 2009, is the first climate protection project in Eritrea and is supposed to offset more than 30.000 tonnes of CO₂ in the first seven years.
