Piccard and Borschberg: Mission (half) Completed – Visit to Monaco Control Centre to be Won

Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg are well on the way to circumnavigating the Earth with their solar-powered aeroplane. Swiss school classes are thrilled, as one of them will win a trip to the Mission Control Centre.

Demand total commitment from the energy and climate pioneers: Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg in front of the solar-powered aeroplane “Solar Impulse 2”.

The two project sponsors of the “<link www.energie-klimapioniere.ch - external-link "Opens external link in current window">Energy and Climate Pioneers</link>” initiative, implemented by myclimate, are finally on the move; and everything is going to plan. Since starting in early March in Abu Dhabi, Solar Impulse 2, flown by André Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard, has now already crossed China. After <link www.solarimpulse.com/leg-6-from-Chongqing-to-Nanjing - external-link "Opens external link in current window">the sixth of twelve stages</link>, Bertrand Piccard safely landed the aeroplane on 21 April in Nanjing on the coast of the South China Sea. They will stay there until good weather allows them to complete the complicated crossing to Hawaii.

Before take-off, Piccard and Borschberg contacted the energy and climate pioneers with a <link www.energie-klimapioniere.ch/si2015/piloten/ - external-link "Opens external link in current window">video message</link> on the energie-klimapioniere.ch website. Piccard assured the students that “all technology can also be used to protect the climate on Earth.” The two pilots also appealed to the pioneering spirit of the young environmentalists: ”Like us, you are pioneers. Good luck with your projects. And have fun.”

Trip to the Mission Control Centre in Monaco to be won

The initiative also offers upper-secondary level students another very special experience. With commitment, creativity and a bit of luck, one class will be allowed to visit the Monaco Control Centre of the Solar Impulse circumnavigation mission and the “back office” of pilots Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg. There will be exclusive insights into this big adventure. Eeach project gives the pilots more energy School classes which are conducting energy or climate protection projects this year as “Energy and Climate Pioneers” are using a mirror installation to send the pilots extra energy. In addition to the installation, the budding energy and climate pioneers can also help Piccard and Borschberg with their circumnavigation of the globe online. At www.energie-klimapioniere.ch, each project that is carried out is represented by an additional solar cell that is activated on<link www.energie-klimapioniere.ch/si2015/visualisierung/ - external-link "Opens external link in current window"> an image of the “Solar Impulse”</link>, and this continues until the aeroplane has enough cells to fly. There, the progress of the circumnavigation of the globe can also be followed directly and live via various widgets associated with <link www.solarimpulse.com/en/home/ - external-link "Opens external link in current window">Solar Impulse</link>.
