Energy and Climate Pioneers: Visit from Kenya and Peru

In September, 13 classes experienced a special motivational talk as part of the Energy and Climate Pioneers project. From the myclimate experts Paul Leon and Job Orina, the students got a first-hand impression of the issues climate change, climate protection and sustainable development in South America and East Africa.

With Paul Leon and Job Orina, myclimate has two “local climate experts” (Lomes). Both are trained environment and sustainability experts and manage the myclimate climate protection projects and partners in East Africa and South/Central America on-site. They visit Zurich at regular intervals to participate in strategic meetings and evaluate new project ideas or further develop existing projects. To keep the visits with their long journeys as sustainable as possible, they remain in Switzerland for several weeks each time. They also use this time to visit Swiss schools as part of the myclimate educational projects.

In the first weeks of September, both of them visited 13 classes in different high schools across German-speaking Switzerland. In the process, they discussed the topics of climate change and its effects on their regions with the students. One significant aspect of their presentations and subsequent discussions was local solution approaches for stemming the consequences of climate change and supporting sustainable development.

The visits took place as part of the Energy and Climate Pioneers project. The initiative, which was brought into being by<link www.swisscom.ch/en/about/company/brand/sponsorship/sustainability.html - external-link "Opens external link in current window"> Swisscom</link> and its partners <link www.energieschweiz.ch/home.aspx - external-link "Opens external link in current window">Energie Schweiz</link>, <link www.solarimpulse.com/eng - external-link "Opens external link in current window">Solar Impulse</link> and myclimate, is targeted at Swiss classes from Kindergarten to primary and secondary school and high school. After an age-appropriate motivational talk, the project stimulates students to take action. The classes design their own project and then realise it. Since its start in September 2010, more than 17,000 students from German- and French-speaking Switzerland (as well as students from Ticino since 2013) have done a total of ca. 730 climate protection and energy efficiency projects.
