Festival de film Locarno – Thought out, sustainable and climate neutral

With the “festival del film Locarno”, an international premium event of the movie scene has been organized since 1946 in Switzerland. Sustainability has also been an important part of the festival. Since 2010, a partnership connects the festival with its famous leopard and myclimate. In 2016, the myclimate biogas project in Nepal will benefit from the climate neutral event.

The climate-neutral event is the consistent continuation of the broad <link www.pardolive.ch/pardo/festival-del-film-locarno/climate-neutral-event.html - external-link "Opens external link in current window">sustainability and environment strategy</link> of the Locarno film festival. It consists of climate-friendly transportation measures like the use of electro and hybrid cars in the own fleet (80% of all cars), the supply of 100 E-Bikes free of charge as well as the general promotion of the public transportation. In addition, the own waste management and recycling system as well as the usage of recycled FSC paper and the broad focus on the digital information transfer also contribute to the carbon emission reduction.

Furthermore, the “Festival del film” supports within the framework of the initiative <link www.pardolive.ch/satellites/open-doors/about.html - external-link "Opens external link in current window">“Open Doors”</link> and in collaboration with the <link www.eda.admin.ch/deza/en/home.html - external-link "Opens external link in current window">Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC</link> filmmakers and directors in developing and emerging countries in order to promote independent productions. The program’s focus country this year is amongst others Nepal. Therefore, the festival offsets its own emissions consistently in the myclimate project “Biogas Plants Increase Health of 7500 Families” the Terai Arc region in Nepal.

The Nepalese region Terai Arc includes several areas with animal and plant species worthy of protection. In order to protect the local ecosystems, 7,500 small biogas plants are being constructed and installed for farmers and their families. The biogas plants reduce the demand for non-sustainable firewood and thus diminish CO₂ emissions as a consequence of deforestation.
