More Sustainability for Parcel Deliveries in Poland – myclimate Contributes to the Transnational Programme

Carbon Neutral Courier Services (CO₂URIER) is a programme sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Polish Centre for Research and Development (NCBR). Its aim is to identify potentials and tools for more sustainable parcel services. One of the four project partners of the German-Polish programme is myclimate. With the aid of the myclimate smart 3 software solution, the first step was to create a carbon footprint report for the Polish courier service Quriers, in addition to a product-related carbon footprint.

carbon footprint at company level, a product carbon footprint (i.e. the greenhouse gas emissions of a particular service/transport line) was also calculated for all Quriers delivery services, based on the European standard. The myclimate smart 3 software solution was used for data collection and emissions calculations.

The climate balance sheet for products was performed for all deliveries, including in-house resources and subcontractors. The calculation of the emissions per individual delivery is based on weight and distance. The following three CO₂URIER programme steps consist of analysis of possibilities for improving the sustainability of courier services, the provision of offsetting packages, and a utilisation plan which includes knowledge transfer.

The programme is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (<link www.bmbf.de/en/index.html - external-link "Opens external link in current window">BMBF</link>) and the Polish Centre for Research and Development (<link www.ncbr.gov.pl/en/ - external-link "Opens external link in current window">NCBR</link>). In partnership with German and Polish companies, the aim is to develop services which are more environmentally friendly and can provide the industry with vital impetus for future developments on the way towards low-emission products.

“For us, participation in the programme is a very interesting project. In logistics companies, we generally see great potential for more climate protection and sustainability. Cross-country cooperation and the special conditions of the Polish market made the calculations with myclimate smart 3 attractive and instructive,” says Daniel Berking, the project manager in charge of this myclimate project.

Quriers

Quriers was founded in 1998 by two students. They created one of the first courier agencies in Poland that also uses bicycle couriers. <link www.quriers.pl/o-nas-przesylki/ - external-link "Opens external link in current window">Environmental awareness and social responsibility</link> play important roles at Quriers. The vehicle fleet consists of low-emission vehicles; as the first courier company in Poland, it also uses electric vehicles. In addition to the focus on bicycle couriers in cities, Quriers has also initiated a reforestation programme and a waste and battery management system.
