myclimate awards cutting-edge tourism and mobility companies

That idyllic weekend in the Swiss Alps, a Berlin bus trip, a car rental in Paris, or an overnight stay with easygoing fellow-travellers in Bangkok – all of these options can be provided in a climate neutral way by innovative companies – and if that doesn't deserve an award...

Winner myclimate awards 2013 (left to right): Sandro Larese, Monika Herzfeld (both Sunstar Hotels), Brianda Lopez (Hostelling International), Ilka Lauenroth (Tui Cars AG), Panya Putsathit and Stefanie Nitz (both meinfernbus.de)

For the second time, myclimate has distinguished companies that play a pioneering role in climate protection with the myclimate Award at the leading tourism trade fair, ITB in Berlin. The winners this year are TUI Cars, Hostelling International, Sunstar Hotels, and MeinFernbus.de.

<link www.tuicars.com/startseite/ - external-link-new-window>TUI Cars</link> wins the award as a pioneer in the integration of carbon compensation into the business model. As of 2013, all trips in TUI Cars rentals will be climate neutral.

The <link www.sunstar.ch/home-en-US/ - external-link-new-window>Sunstar hotel group</link> received the award in the “hotel industry” category, as a global pioneer in carbon compensation within this industry. For five years, this Swiss hotel group has been compensation all of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its hotels, and has significantly decreased the emissions per overnight stay through additional efforts of its own.

<link www.meinfernbus.de - external-link-new-window>MeinFernbus.de</link> received the award for “newcomer of the year 2012 in the field of mobility”. “MeinFernbus.de has hit a nerve with the integration of voluntary carbon compensation for passengers, a fact that is demonstrated by the thankfully high number of customers that consciously choose this option”, emphasised Stefan Baumeister, Managing Director of myclimate Germany gGmbH, at the presentation of the awards.

The myclimate Award for “newcomer of the year 2012 in the hotel industry” was awarded to <link www.hihostels.com/web/index.en.htm - external-link-new-window>Hostelling International (HI)</link>. The international youth hostel association network has integrated the option of carbon compensation for an overnight stay into its online booking process in 13 countries already, and plans a roll-out for the other countries in its global network during 2013.
