SBTi Net-Zero Standard: First framework for corporate net-zero targets

With the Net-Zero Standard, the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) offers companies the world's first framework for setting net-zero targets. These clear requirements enable companies to develop ambitious climate targets in line with the latest climate research findings and the 1.5°C target.

The Net-Zero Standard is based on key guidelines, criteria and recommendations that provide a science-based definition of net zero. Climate targets based on these requirements are in line with the latest climate research findings and thus ensure that companies can set effective net-zero targets.

Key requirements of the Net-Zero Standard

  1. Aim for a rapid and significant reduction in emissions
  2. Develop short- and long-term climate targets
  3. No net-zero aspirations until long-term targets are achieved
  4. Act beyond the value chain
