CO2 footprint of travel becomes comparable

Comparing prices for upcoming trips is often standard. But customers who also want to find out or even compare the carbon footprint of their vacation face an almost impossible task. The newly founded association KlimaLink wants to change that sustainably with a new platform for the travel industry. myclimate is a founding member.

On the one hand, travel to emerging and developing countries makes a significant contribution to value creation, job security and social stability. On the other hand, the industry contributes to global warming with around eight percent of all emissions worldwide.

KlimaLink now wants to achieve transparency with regard to the climate-damaging emissions of the trips offered and establish a uniform standard for calculating CO2 emissions. Only in this way can the climate impact of travel be included both in the design of offers and in travel decisions. Such a uniform and reliable standard does not yet exist.

This gap is now being closed by the KlimaLink association, which will make emissions data available digitally on the basis of a uniform CO2 calculation standard and regularly develop this data further. The emissions data for all relevant travel components such as flights, hotels, cruises, trains, buses or cars will thus be made available in a single data source for companies, but also for travelers. In this way, climate-friendly sustainable travel will increasingly be brought to the fore, offered and also booked.

In order to establish this process of change as a broad standard in the travel industry, 22 founding members have joined forces. myclimate provides advice as a climate protection organization and supports the association as a founding member with technical and expert knowledge.

In addition to myclimate, the founding members of KlimaLink are: Deutscher Reiseverband (DRV), Österreichischer ReiseVerband (ÖRV) and Schweizer Reise-Verband (SRV), the Verband Internet Reisevertrieb (VIR), AERTicket, AER Kooperation, Amadeus, Atmosfair, CHAMÄLEON, DER Touristik, FTI Group, Gebeco, Futouris, Hotelplan Group, Lufthansa City Center, midoco, OLIMAR Reisen, QTA, Studiosus, TourCert and TFC Airlebnis.

In 2024, the KlimaLink platform will be available to the entire industry.
